I was discharged from U.S.Navy in 1973 and began a career that would last for forty years. My time in the service provided a first opportunity to travel and visits to Morocco and Europe opened up a world of possibilities. That same year I became a teacher at a small, private school in North Carolina. From 1973 to 1979 I taught, coached, and counseled students while pursuing a graduate degree in Guidance from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Little did I realize that those early years and first professional steps put me on a path to additional graduate study and a long career in international education.
One thing led to another and I completed another graduate degree at the University of Notre Dame. From 1979-1983 I coached college soccer and also worked as a teacher and counselor in Scotland, England, Venezuela and Belgium. In 1989, I was hired to teach history but assumed responsibilities in college counseling at the American School of Madrid. From that point forward college counseling became my professional focus. Thereafter, I have practiced both the art and the science and all the intricacies involved in higher education guidance. My career includes experiences at a wide-range of schools from large to small, international and US independent, schools with IB or AP programs, in established schools, in growing, or in brand new schools. Over time I developed more expertise at every new school and learned with each new experience. By my latest count I have visited over five-hundred colleges and universities in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland and Australia and took advantage of every professional development opportunity.
In 2010, my wife and I were compelled to return home by the reality of aging parents and elder care issues. We took up residence in Boston and on Cape Cod. In 2012, Search established the role of college counseling consultant and VOCA was developed. In that role, I have replied to requests for advice, help, and professional support in the critical area of college and university guidance. From 2012 and 2019 I provided college advising and consulting services for American and International Schools located in Argentina, mainland China, Hong Kong, Egypt, Panama, Spain, Korea, India and Singapore.
I look forward to applying my specialist skills and extensive knowledge in developing or improving college and university advising in new or established schools in 2020. I will be present at the Search Fair in Boston if you wish to discuss your school needs in college and university advising.

VOCA Cost and Fees
VOCA is a college counseling consulting program based on school visits and additional support. A "visit" may consist of a week or several weeks at a time. All visits are based on the specific needs of the school and the expressed purpose of the visit. A longer term visitation schedule can be arranged for a school quarter or semester.
What occurs during a VOCA visit? A visit can be designed to provide an assessment or audit of the current configuration and services in college and university advising. Or, it can be designed to train school personnel in college counseling. In addition, it may simply enable an overview of the program and suggestions for improvement prior to an accreditation process.
Over the past seven years Mr. Murphy was asked to work directly with students; train and mentor in-school personnel; present information to parent groups; create, or "start-up," a new college and university guidance program for new or young international schools. He has also been hired to develop a long-range plan for the improvement of a counseling department; or analyze and change the emphasis or direction of a program that was not meeting the needs or expectations of the students and school community.
The average fee for a week-long trip ranges from $3500 to $5000. In addition, all flight, transportation, hotel and living expenses expenses are covered by the school. A "week" consists of five professional work days plus two travel days. Compensation for monthly or longer visits would be based on the needs, location, and budgetary considerations of the school.
Mr. Murphy is glad to discuss a specific, individual school plan, fee structure and cost with a head of school or an authorized school administrator. Please call his home number in Boston at 617 202 5678, or email Jack directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
I look forward to working with you, your students, your parent community and your school in 2020.
