School Details

With five original students, Jakarta Intercultural School was founded by UN workers in 1951. These pioneers introduced relevant schooling in English for children of expats in the newfound Republic of Indonesia. From early days the school's international identity was clear. It was originally named the Joint Embassy School (JES) after its British, American, Australian and (then) Yugoslavian embassy partners. Just over a decade later, in 1978, JES became Jakarta International School (JIS) and in 2014, Jakarta Intercultural School.

Today, with high expectations for standards based, results oriented, engaged learning and a culture where students seek personal excellence in every pursuit, JIS helps each community member become their best to be best for the world.

As JIS continues its 67-year journey, we value each decade and each learner whose personal story betters our own. With 2,300 students, around 300 faculty and countless alumni and parents contributing daily to the school's legacy and the world around us, we can only be encouraged, humbled and motivated to keep learning together for the sake of our students' borderless future.

Facilities

JIS campuses and facilities support exceptional curricular and co-curricular learning experiences for students in safe, clean and well-protected spaces. Each campus offers air-conditioned and wireless classrooms; dedicated visual and performing arts theaters; technology labs; age-appropriate library/media centers; cafeterias; as well as swimming pools, fields, covered recreational spaces and gymnasiums. Each JIS campus offers a serene, tropical oasis for the JIS Community in Jakarta.

POSITION: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VICE PRINCIPAL

REPORTS TO: Elementary School Principal
CONTRACT TERM: 3 School Years (2020-2023)

PURPOSE

Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) educators provide memorable experiences for JIS students. The Elementary School Vice Principal works with and reports to the Elementary School Principal, to lead the strategic and day-to-day operation of the school. The Vice Principal deputizes for the Principal in the latter’s absence. In conjunction with the Elementary Leadership Team (ELT), the Vice Principal facilitates communication, promotes an inquiry-based approach to teaching and ensures articulation between school divisions at JIS. This position brings the JIS Vision, Mission and Values to life in areas of supervision, professional development and campus matters.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCES and ATTRIBUTES
  1. Minimum Master’s degree
  2. Relevant administrative credential
  3. Minimum 5 years of experience in a leadership role or in an administrative capacity
  4. Experience in a school with a well-defined Elementary School philosophy – International setting preferred
  5. Knowledge of and experience with ES curricular programs
  6. Knowledge of child development and parenting needs
  7. Creative and innovative thinker
  8. Strong understanding of literacy practices, including Reading and Writing workshop, the teaching of Mathematics through a conceptual approach and inquiry
  9. Experience in coaching teams and individuals
  10. Experience working with different constituent groups, including parents, community members, teachers and other external professionals
  11. Understanding and ability to apply Professional Learning Community concepts
  12. Advocate for Inclusion through Differentiated Instruction and EAL in the Mainstream
  13. Versed in curriculum planning processes in support of curriculum design and writing
  14. Understand and implement processes that support collection of student data and establishing protocols for reviewing at student learning/data
  15. Strong digital literacy skills
  16. Student-centered decision maker
  17. A professional who takes initiative, communicates effectively and has strong interpersonal skills
  18. Demonstrated cultural sensitivity

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Leading in the day-to-day running and operations of the school
  2. Supporting and mentoring new faculty members within division as assigned by the Elementary School (ES) Principal
  3. Assisting the ES Principal in faculty and staff supervision and evaluation in accordance with established procedures
  4. Developing, supporting, and where appropriate, delivering professional development opportunities for all faculty and staff
  5. Working in conjunction with principal and team leaders to develop annual focus areas, goals and action plans in support of these
  6. Working in conjunction with principal and curriculum coordinator to develop curriculum planning process and to coordinate/facilitate unit writing/revision/design process lead out on supporting teachers in looking at student work and data
  7. Providing leadership in cooperation with other administrators in the development and maintenance of the school’s educational program
  8. Preparing, updating and supervising various schedules, including the duty rosters for student supervision outside of class
  9. Working in conjunction with the counselors and teachers to address the social emotional needs of students and behavioral needs, as needed
  10. Working with parents on a wide variety of needs, including students’ development, social/emotional and behavioral needs
  11. Assisting with the general supervision of campus, emphasizing security/safety and food services
  12. Interviewing, hiring and supervising teaching assistants
  13. Assisting the Transportation Office with the supervision and training of bus chaperones and drivers
  14. Serving on the schoolwide committees/task forces as needed (i.e., Risk Management, IT and Facilities)
  15. Attending Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings as administrative liaison for the campus
  16. Member of the Schoolwide Educational Leaders Team
  17. Supporting schoolwide and divisional initiatives and events, strategic planning and accreditation processes
  18. Developing and communicating the master schedule
  19. Preparing parent, teacher and teaching assistant handbooks
  20. Embracing the JIS Learning Dispositions of Resilience, Resourcefulness, Relating and Reflecting
  21. Performing other related duties and assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the ES Principal
