The Franconian International School (FIS) in Erlangen, located in southern Germany, serves primarily the international community of the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg and educates students in an international environment according to high academic standards. It provides an atmosphere respectful of diverse cultures and promotes responsible global citizenship. The FIS Strategic Plan is committed to Cultures of Thinking and developing an excellent pastoral program. The FIS is a non-profit, financially stable organization governed by a Board of Directors, which is elected by the members of the FIS Association including the sponsoring companies, most prominent of which are Siemens and adidas.

Head of School

The successful candidate for the FIS will continue to develop the school as a place of belonging and role model a passion for learning aligned with the IBO Mission Statement. This states that: “Lifelong learners (…) understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.” They will be visible, approachable and recognize individual strengths, work to bring the best out in people, and build an effective team driven by strong leadership skills embedded in the FIS Mission and Vision.
The school has made significant progress with the strategic plan, in particular:
- Interactions that reflect mutual understanding
- Lessons are planned, taught and evaluated to ensure authentic learning, inquiry, creativity and deep thinking
- Distributed leadership enabling a culture where change and growth are embraced and affirmed
The incoming Head of School will appreciate the FIS journey up to this point and further consolidate the developments and initiatives at the school, while seeking new opportunities for growth.
As a result, the successful candidate will have:
- Graduate degree in Education
- Minimum C1 proficiency in German
- Proven track record of success in a school leadership position
- Clear vision for international education in an Early Years through Grade 12 setting
- Experience in a culturally and educationally diverse school environment
- Sound knowledge and understanding of international curricula (IPC, IBMYP, IBDP)
- Experience with school development models of progressive pedagogy
- Understanding of Cultures of Thinking as a development framework for schools
- Keen interest in keeping up and establishing excellent relations with stakeholders
- Experience with budget management
- Experience with strategic planning
About the School

The current enrolment at the FIS is 650 students from Early Years to Grade 12 who represent over 40 different nationalities. Most of them have a broad cultural background and are fluent in more than one language. They come from business and professional families, with parents often working at one of our sponsoring companies. On average, students attend the FIS for about three years. Student voice and student leadership play an important role in decisions and school improvement.
The FIS operates a full-day program with classes taught in English. In the Early Years and Elementary School (Grades 1 to 5), students follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which includes a range of subjects with specialized teachers for German, PE, Art, Music and Performing Arts. The Secondary School offers the IB Middle Years Programme in Grades 6 to 10 and the IB Diploma Program in Grades 11 and 12, as well as the FIS High School Diploma. There is a strong commitment to English as an Additional Language for integrating the students into mainstream classes. A Learning Support Program and Counseling teams assist student needs.
Faculty, Administration and Leadership
The FIS has a highly qualified faculty of 110 full and part-time international teachers and 20 learning assistants who come from over 20 countries. Most have taught or worked at other international schools throughout the world. The student / teacher ratio at the FIS is 8:1. An administrative and support team of 40 members make an important contribution in multiple areas so that the daily school business with all its challenges can run smoothly. The Senior Leadership Team consists of the Heads of Primary and Secondary, the Head of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Head of School / Curriculum, the Business Manager, the Deputy Head and Head of School.
The modern school facilities have spacious classrooms, state of the art science and art labs, music rooms, a theater and an Aula, as well as three libraries, a cafeteria, and two full-sized gymnasiums, one of which was completed in 2020.
The FIS is a private international school approved by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The FIS is an IB World School.
The city of Erlangen is located in the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg. It is the smallest of the eight major cities in Bavaria with a population of about 110.000 citizens, but on rank 2 of the strong business locations in Germany after the Bavarian capital Munich. High-ranking companies such as Siemens are located there, as well as the prestigious Friedrich-Alexander University. The well-known sports company adidas is based in the neighboring town Herzogenaurach. Erlangen has a beautiful city center and excellent public transport. The city of Nuremberg, where the nearest airport is located, can be easily reached in about 25 minutes and has a population of about 518.000.

The final short listed candidates will be interviewed by different stakeholders in early December with a decision made before the winter break.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the entire interview process may have to be conducted remotely, depending on the situation in Erlangen / Germany and the candidates’ locations.

The FIS seeks to appoint a Head of School with a view to a long-term commitment. Salary and benefits are competitive and will reflect the successful candidate's experience and qualifications. The FIS reserves the right to appoint a candidate before the above-mentioned closing date.
