Position Vacancy Announcement - Upper School Principal (Grades 6-12)
Beginning August 1, 2010
Introduction
Casablanca American School (CAS) founded in 1973, is a co-educational day
school with an enrollment of approximately 570 students (320 in the lower school
and 250 in the Upper School) from 34 countries. Approximately 60% of the
students are Moroccan. CAS offers a Nursery (Age 3) to Grade 12 educational
program, and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council for International Schools (CIS).
A nine-member board, seven of who are elected, one who is appointed by the
U.S. Consul General and the Director, governs the school. The school community
includes members of the diplomatic corps, owners and employees of foreign and
local businesses, and members of the Moroccan government.
The school is located on a 5 acre campus, has purpose built facilities which
include 45 classrooms, two computer labs, physical education facilities,
sports fields, a cafeteria, two libraries, and a state-of-the-art theater that
seats 380 people.
Curriculum
CAS offers an American style standards based curriculum. English is the
language of instruction. The school also offers the IB Diploma program. CAS
provides services for students with mild learning disabilities in its PACE Program and support for English Language Learners (ELL).
The curriculum is comparable to that offered in university-preparatory
schools of like size in the United States. French and Arabic are required subjects of study beginning in Grade 2 and extending through Grade 10. 100% of the CAS graduates enter colleges and universities in the United States, the UK and Europe.
The Position
The Upper School Principal assumes overall responsibility for the planning
and day-to-day administration of the Upper School program and its activities.
The Principal will report to the Director.
Major responsibilities for the position include:
- Articulating and modeling the CAS mission, philosophy and core values
- Collaborating with the Curriculum Coordinator to lead curriculum review,
development, and delivery
- Ensuring that the Upper School curriculum reflects best practice in the
field, and is in harmony with the educational philosophy of the school
- Being a proactive leader drawing together the strengths of the various
members of the Upper School staff;
- Facilitating and developing positive and effective communication and
relationships with the Board, parents, students, staff and the greater Casablanca
community
- Monitoring teacher performance through implementation of the prescribed
teacher evaluation system
- Collaborating, planning and supporting professional development for staff
- Working collaboratively with the school's leadership team and faculty to
help create new programs, institute best practices, achieve excellence and to
ensure a cohesive school operation and development
- Creating an efficient, productive, and caring school atmosphere where all
students and faculty have opportunity to be recognized for their best efforts
- Ensure that all of the school's resources are identified used to serve
students and faculty members alike; while ensuring both reach their full
performance potential.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Education and/or Educational Administration
- Administrative certification
- A minimum of two years full time experience as an Upper School Principal or
Assistant
- Upper School teaching experience
- Prior leadership experience with proven ability to motivate and delegate
- Demonstrated ability to successfully address cross-cultural issues
- Sound knowledge of, and experience in the IB Diploma Program as well as
current best practices in middle school education.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work within a
team; positive attitude; and a keen sense of humor
- Familiarity with academic accreditation procedures
- A strong functional awareness of how to use technology to enhance learning
Preferred Qualifications
- Fluent speaker of English and French
- Five or more years of successful experience in an international school
setting
- Experience with implementation of standards based curriculum
Salary and Benefits
Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with the
qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The initial contract is for
three years.
