Al Ain

Al Ain is an oasis city and the second largest in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Having a history dating back to the 4th millennium BC. Sheikh Zayed's (founder of the UAE) vision and commitment has seen Al Ain grow into the modern city and one of the garden of the UAE it is today. Planned as a garden city, the visitor is taken by the multitude of roundabouts, each offering a unique display of water, landscaping and sculpture. Boulevards are tree lined and there are no high rise buildings. Al Ain is the home of the UAE University, the country's largest museum and the biggest zoo, parks, gardens and guest houses. It is also one of the nation’s leading agricultural centres and is now serviced by a new international airport.

Archaeological excavations have shown that around 3000 B.C., an advanced civilization existed in this area. It was Sheikh Zayed's dream, when he was the Ruler's Representative in Al Ain, to convert it into a green-land. His massive forestation program then has today made Al Ain into one of the greenest cities in the Arabic Gulf area. The Ruler's Representative at present is H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan who carries forward the torch of his illustrious predecessor. Al Ain's scenic beauty, its entertainment park and museum are a major attraction as a holiday resort. It is also well connected to the rest of the world by its International Airport.

Al Ain is located at about 160 km east of Abu Dhabi and at the same distance south-east of Dubai. It is a one and a half hour drive from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. There are also domestic and international flights to the Al Ain International airport.

The best times to visit Al Ain are in the winter when time can be spent exploring the ancient archaeological sites, the hot springs in Jebel Hafiz, the zoo etc.

The area, historically known as the Buraimi Oasis, has been continuously inhabited for more than four thousand years and Al Ain is considered central to the cultural heritage of the country. It is the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates. Today the name Buraimi refers to the Omani town whose urban area merges with that of Al Ain. There are numerous underground water springs in the area, which explain its attractiveness as an area of settlement. Traces of its traditional past remain, including camel racing and breeding. The ancient falaj system of irrigation is still in use in some areas distributing underground water by a network of tunnels emerging eventually into open channels whose flow can be directed and regulated.

Modern Times

Al Ain has a higher proportion of Emirati nationals than elsewhere in the country; however the majority of its residents are expatriates particularly from the Indian sub-continent. There are fewer Western expatriates than in the larger centers of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This gives Al Ain a more authentic Arabic look and feel compared to the larger and more cosmopolitan cities of the Emirates.

It is often called the 'Garden City of the Arabian Gulf' given the many parks, tree-lined avenues and decorative roundabouts within the city. Strict height controls on new buildings, to no more than four floors, emphasizes the greenery of the city.

Tourism & Recreation

Al Ain is developing as a tourist destination. It regularly records the highest summer temperatures in the country, but the dry desert air makes it a welcome retreat from the coastal humidity of the larger cities. Many Emirati nationals in Abu Dhabi have holiday houses in the city making it a popular weekend destination for families from the capital city. Its attractions include the Al Ain National Museum, the Al Ain Palace Museum, several restored forts and the Hili archeological site, dating back to the Bronze Age. Jebel Hafeet, a 1340 metre high mountain dominates the surrounding area. A visit to the mineral springs at the base and a drive to the top of this mountain for sunset is popular. Other attractions include the Al Ain Oasis in the city centre and other oases dotted around the area, cool retreats in the middle of the summer heat, a zoo, amusement park named "Fun City", many well maintained parks, most popular with families in the summer evenings, and a heritage village.

The city is home to the successful association football (soccer) club, Al Ain FC.

Commerce and Industry

Al Ain is an important services centre for a wide area extending into Oman. There are two major shopping centres, Al Ain Mall and Al Jimi Mall, as well as traditional souks for fruit & vegetables and livestock. Industry is growing, but still small scale, and includes the Coca Cola bottling plant and a cement works. Service industries such as car sales, mechanics and other artisans are located in the area known as Sanaiya. Social and governmental infrastructure includes United Arab Emirates University, Higher Colleges of Technology, well-equipped medical facilities, including the teaching hospital at Tawam, military training areas and Al Ain International Airport.

Al Ruwais / Al Ghayathi

Located some 240 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi city, the Ruwais Industrial and Housing Complex has been developed by ADNOC as a major contributor to the national economy and represents a series of multi-billion-dollar investments by the Company. Investments are not just in industrial terms but in social terms. This can be seen today in the model city that has been developed over the last 30years.

The Ruwais story began in the 1970s, when plans were laid to transform a remote desert site into a self-contained industrial town, geared to fulfilling the downstream requirements of Abu Dhabi's booming oil and gas industry. Centered around ADNOC's Ruwais Refinery, the complex was officially inaugurated in 1982 by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, Ruler of Abu Dhabi and the visionary behind Abu Dhabi's remarkable development and prosperity. Once a small fishing headland from which a handful of people scratched a seasonal living, Ruwais today is one of the most modern industrial complexes in the Middle East. In addition to the original 120,000 barrels-per-day refinery, which was expanded in 1985 with the commissioning of a 27,000 b/d hydro cracker complex, major facilities at Ruwais include a natural gas liquids fractionation plant operated by Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd (GASCO), a fertilizer plant run by Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL), a marine terminal and a sulphur handling terminal. Industry needs people and so Ruwais has also been developed into a model 'new town' with a population of several thousand.
