James Ambrose of Search Associates

A Search Associate since 1997, Jim now accepts candidates from all western states (except California, Washington & Oregon) and, of course, candidates who formerly worked with him. Much of his current work involves consulting with school boards on Head searches, governance issues and strategic/long term financial planning.

A graduate of Hillsdale College (Michigan), he earned his M.A. in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University in 1973 and immediately secured the post of Principal at the Stavanger American School in Norway. Jim went on to a similar position at Cairo American College (Egypt) for four years before heading his own school in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 1978 to 1982. Two-year assignments in Sri Lanka and Zambia followed.

In 1986, Mr. Ambrose became Superintendent of the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and oversaw the addition of a high school, accreditation and extensive growth following the Gulf War. He left in 1994 to head the United Nations International School of Hanoi (Vietnam) and was honored in 1997 as "Superintendent of the Year" by AAIE (Association for the Advancement of International Education).

Jim operates his office with the able assistance of his wife, Terry, who has extensive office supervision experience and was last employed in Hanoi as Administrative Assistant in charge of personnel for the US Embassy. Mrs. Ambrose formerly taught PE and coached in several overseas schools.

Mr. Ambrose has become well-known for his work in school governance and produced four videotapes for the purpose, sponsored by the Overseas Schools Advisory Committee and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He has been a member of the governing boards for the Near East/South Asian Council of Overseas Schools (NESA), the International Educator (TIE), and the Commission of Elementary Schools, Middle States Association (CES-MSA). In addition, Jim has been a featured speaker at many professional conferences and has acted as a consultant for several international schools. His articles regularly appear in numerous publications.

Most recently, Jim is a core faculty member for the Academy for International School Heads (AISH) and the Principal's Training Center (PTC).
