A Real First Step into International Education
Not every international teaching career starts with years of experience and a stack of certifications.
Some start with a single year abroad, in a real school, with real mentorship, doing real work.
The Search Associates Teaching Internship program connects aspiring educators with international schools that offer structured, one-year internship positions. These are schools in our network that have built programs designed to develop early career educators through hands-on classroom experience and professional guidance.
This is a focused program. The number of schools offering internship positions is limited, and the positions themselves are competitive. But for the right candidate, it is one of the strongest ways to begin a career in international education.
early career and college seniors
Who This Is For
If you are a college senior approaching graduation or a recent graduate within two years of completing your degree, this program is built for you.
You may be exploring teaching for the first time without formal certification. You may have your certification in hand or pending. Either way, you do not need two years of full-time teaching experience to be considered. What international schools look for in an intern goes beyond credentials. They want educators who bring flexibility, enthusiasm, a genuine love of working with children, and the adventurous spirit it takes to build a life in a new country. Flexibility, in particular, matters. Schools need interns who are ready to step in where they are needed and adapt as the year unfolds.
This program is not designed for mid-career professionals looking to transition into teaching. It is specifically for early career educators at the beginning of their journey.
what to expect
What The Experience Looks Like
Each internship is a one-year paid position at an international school in our network.
All internships include a salary, housing, and airfare. Additional benefits vary by school and region. Schools design and run their own internship programs, and no two look exactly alike. Some include formal mentorship and structured professional development. Others focus on classroom immersion with guidance from experienced colleagues. What they share is a commitment to giving early career educators a meaningful role with real responsibilities. You are not observing from the sidelines. You are in the classroom, contributing, and growing as a professional from day one.
A Note on Certification and Visas
Visa requirements for international educators vary by country and are tightening in many regions.
Some schools can host interns without teaching certification. Others require certification to be completed or in progress before a visa can be issued. We encourage all intern candidates to pursue certification where possible. It strengthens your candidacy, expands the number of schools available to you, and positions you for a longer career in international education.
It is also worth noting that visa eligibility can depend on your passport and country of citizenship. Some host countries have more straightforward visa pathways for certain passport holders than others. This does not reflect your qualifications as an educator, but it can affect which schools and regions are realistic options.
Where This Can Lead
Many educators who start as interns never leave the international school community. A strong internship year builds the classroom experience, the professional references, and the global perspective that international schools look for when hiring. For educators who discover that international teaching is the right fit, the internship becomes the first chapter of a much longer career. Search Associates is here for that journey too.
