Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Dresden International School (DIS), we are pleased to announce the appointment of CARLA MARSCHALL AS THE NEXT HEAD OF SCHOOL of DIS, effective August 1, 2022. Carla’s selection has been shared with the DIS community by the DIS Chair of the Board, Anthony Hyman.

Carla Marschall brings a wide set of international teaching and leadership experience to the position, serving most recently as Director of Teaching and Learning at UWC South East Asia, East Campus in Singapore. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing the teaching and learning of 2500 students in collaboration with school principals and across school sectors. Prior to assuming this role, Carla also served as Head of Curriculum Development and Research across both UWC South East Asia campuses and Primary Vice Principal at Dover campus. During her time at UWC South East Asia, she co-authored two books, Concept-Based Inquiry in Action (2018) and Worldwise Learning: A Teacher’s Guide to Shaping a Just, Sustainable Future (2021), which focus on concept-based learning and issues-based learning across the K-12 continuum. Each of these books translates educational theory into practical strategies for teachers, while highlighting the transformative potential of K-12 education as a force for positive social and ecological change.

Carla has held other international school leadership roles at Zurich International School, Quarry Bay School (English Schools Foundation), and the Berlin Metropolitan School, and served as a classroom teacher both in the United States and Germany. During these experiences she developed deep contextual knowledge of International Baccalaureate Programmes as well as intercultural competence.

Equally, Carla brings a strong academic background to the headship at DIS. She holds two Master's degrees in the areas of Educational Leadership and Elementary Education from the Institute of Education, University of London and Teachers College, Columbia University respectively. She also received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Pertinent for her role at DIS, an IB World School, she is the recipient of the IB Advanced Certificate in Leadership Research, while also earning the Certificate of International School Leadership from the Principals’ Training Center.

Carla is a multilingual leader, who values and models the importance of language learning. She is fluent in English and German, a bilingual competence of importance in her role as ambassador for DIS in the school community, the city of Dresden, and the wider region. She also has some knowledge of French and Mandarin. Anthony Hyman, DIS Board Chair, in commenting on the feedback from the stakeholder groups that interviewed Carla, remarks in the community announcement that, “Carla came across as a deep thinker and strong leader who integrates the student experience into the academic mission for the school, with the ability to unite the various stakeholder groups as well as the school’s surrounding environment to create one clear and aligned vision for the school.”

Carla is joined by her family, and her children will be joining the DIS community as students.
