Haugesund is a young, vibrant town dating back to Viking times. As with the Vikings, seafaring and trade symbolize this coastal region. The plentiful shoals of herring along the coastline allowed Haugesund to develop as an important hub for fish export and, later, as Norway's leading shipbuilding and maritime center. Today the region is the home of international companies within maritime industry and technology.

The town is surrounded with mountains in the east and the North Sea coming in from west. There are great opportunities to enjoy the clean and fresh coastal nature. The region has a wide range of cultural activities, such as theater and music festival and modern arenas for indoor sports. The countryside is very popular for both outdoor sports and hiking.
