Doug Woodward Appointed New Upper School Principal at AIS Vilnius

On behalf of Dr. Amanda Sunderman, Director of the American International School of Vilnius (AISV), Search Associates is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Doug Woodward as the school’s new Upper School Principal for Grades 6–12, beginning in August 2027.

As AISV looks toward an exciting future, Dr. Sunderman expressed great faith in Doug’s abilities:

As AISV enters an exciting new chapter, I am confident that Doug has the character, experience, and leadership capacity to guide our community forward. Doug stood out as a leader of integrity, wisdom, and genuine care for people. He demonstrated a strong ability to build trust, navigate complex challenges with humility and confidence, and bring people together around a shared vision. His extensive leadership experience, commitment to student wellbeing, and collaborative approach align closely with AISV’s mission and values.

Doug currently serves as Middle School Assistant Principal at the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), where he helps lead a division of more than 400 students at one of the world’s most respected international schools. His career spans more than 25 years in international education, including leadership roles in Jordan and Malaysia and teaching positions in Peru and the United States. Throughout that time, he has earned a reputation as a collaborative and student-centered leader who empowers educators, fosters professional growth, and builds cultures grounded in trust, reflection, and continuous improvement.

A highly respected contributor to the international education community, Doug is an Agency Trainer for Adaptive Schools and Cognitive Coaching and has presented extensively through Thinking Collaborative. He has also shared his expertise at EARCOS, NESA, and AASSA conferences. For the past 15 years, he has served as a CIS-WASC Accreditation Team Leader, supporting school improvement efforts across 12 international schools worldwide. In addition, he co-authored Better Together: Collaborative Teaching and Learning in Inclusive International Schools and Unleashing the Power of Collective Efficacy.

Reflecting on his upcoming move to Lithuania, Doug shared his enthusiasm for joining the AISV community:

There is so much that excites me about joining the AISV community in just over a year. Prior to my arrival, I had heard so much about the vibrancy and closeness of the community. Even during a short visit, it is evident that there are so many strengths, and it will be an honor to work alongside everyone as the next chapters of the school unfold. And what a privilege to get to live in Vilnius! When walking through the old city, every view was another postcard-perfect image; it will be a delight to embrace the city, the country, and the culture.

Doug’s passion for education extends far beyond school leadership. He is deeply committed to building meaningful relationships with students and believes some of the most impactful learning experiences happen outside the classroom. A longtime coach and mentor, he is known for his visible presence around campus—connecting with students in hallways, visiting classrooms, greeting students as they arrive at school, and celebrating milestones both large and small.

Many of his favorite memories come from moments when school communities come together in celebration. Whether cheering on students at sporting events, enjoying end-of-semester performances, or watching teachers and students share laughter through community traditions, Doug values the sense of belonging that helps young people thrive. One experience that continues to inspire Doug is leading ISKL’s annual Malaysia Week, an immersive outdoor education program that challenges students to step beyond their comfort zones:

During our week without walls, for the last decade (or so), I've led a jungle survivor trip where we camp in the jungle, cook all our own food, climb a mountain, go white-water rafting, and play in a stunning river. We also do wilderness first aid, team challenges, and have a ton of fun. The pride and growth of students at the end of the week, having accomplished things that they never thought possible, is so rewarding and invigorating.

Outside of school, Doug enjoys staying active through swimming and running. An avid reader, he is often immersed in several fiction and nonfiction books at once. Weekends and holidays frequently find him exploring the outdoors, hiking, or traveling with family and friends.

Doug will be joined at AISV by his wife, Tracy, an experienced educator and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Language and Literature teacher. The couple, whose three children are now adults, is looking forward to becoming part of the AISV community in 2027.

What an honor to become a part of a school that lives and embodies its guiding statements, including its deep commitment to relationships among its members as well as the power of ‘Connect. Inspire. Empower’ within its mission statement. It will be a delight to partner and learn together with everyone as a school with so many strengths continues to excel. Labai aciu (Many thanks).”

Search Associates extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Sunderman and the many AISV community members who participated in this important leadership search. We congratulate the school on a thoughtful and successful process and offer our appreciation to the many outstanding candidates who expressed interest in serving in this role.
