International Teaching in Mandalay

Set to open August 2020, Yangon International School, Mandalay (YIS Mandalay) will be a private, co-educational, preparatory, Pre-K–12 school. Initially, the school will comprise pre-school through Grade 8, with one added grade each year from 2021 through 2024. YIS Mandalay’s brand new, state-of-the-art facilities include multiple art and music rooms, three libraries, STEAM and science labs, a pool, gymnasium, and a theatre.

The campus rests on the eastern side of Mandalay, within a culturally diverse and historically significant community, surrounded by low-rise developments and open fields. The center of town is less than two kilometers away, and Mandalay Hill and the Palace are approximately three kilometers away.

YIS Mandalay will deliver the U.S. Common Core, using project-based learning, and the WIDA—a suite of English language proficiency assessments for K– Grade 12.  So far, 90 students are pre-enrolled, and the teaching staff of eight includes two from North America. Not only will its teachers enjoy small class sizes, but the new school will also benefit from a close relationship with its established sister school, Yangon International School (YIS).

YIS Mandalay will provide a variety of competitive and recreational athletics throughout the school year, just as YIS has done. YIS competes in the Yangon Athletic Conference (YAC) as well as domestic and international tournaments. The YAC provides a competitive sports program for middle and high school students Grades 6–12 participating in volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, table tennis, cross country, and badminton.

YIS Mandalay is open to hiring exceptional, newly-certified teachers without much experience as well as couples, including those with a non-teaching partner. Candidates interested in applying to the school must have teacher certification and hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. There is no age limit to obtain a work permit in Myanmar.

Benefits include a non-taxed salary, furnished apartments with all utilities included, and a settling-in allowance, paid locally on arrival. Annual airfare, along with airfare at the beginning and end of a contract, is provided for the teacher and approved dependents. Teachers benefit from a 100% tuition benefit for their dependents enrolled in grade levels the school currently offers. YIS Mandalay also covers 50% of all health and dental insurance costs. While external professional development (PD) opportunities are offered, the school also provides ongoing in-house PD. This package allows for fantastic savings!
