International Teaching Opportunities in Phnom Penh

The Canadian International School of Phnom Penh (CIS), centrally located in the capital city of Cambodia, boasts modern and purpose-built facilities, with an exciting expansion project underway! Soon the school community will enjoy an indoor swimming pool, a 600-seat auditorium, a fully-equipped secondary building with underground parking, and a large outdoor playing area big enough for three, seven-a-side soccer fields.

Accredited by Alberta Education, CIS uses the Reggio Emilia approach and inquiry-based learning to follow the Alberta, Canada curriculum. The school is also applying for authorization by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), with the goal of delivering the Diploma Programme to students in grades 11 and 12 by 2021/2022.

At present, nearly 500 students in nursery–Grade 8 are enrolled, and each year a grade will be added through Grade 12. Though the student population represents 30 nationalities, nearly half of the students are Cambodian, with 9% from North America and the U.K. In addition to Bilingual Programs in both French and Mandarin, CIS offers French, Mandarin, and Khmer (Cambodian) as language choices. The teaching staff of 44 includes 25 from North America, two from Cambodia, and three from the U.K.

Each term, students can register for a wide selection of extra-curricular activities. Choices have included cooking class, robotics, karate, CIS Sports Club, beginner Khmer or French, piano, skating, Rainbow Clay Art, jewelry making, and swimming. While CIS mostly utilizes its own excellent facilities—like the swimming pool and the round room for yoga—other activities, such as golf, are held on the Diamond Island complex.

CIS Preschool holds its own after-school program for both students and parents. The program, which takes place from 3:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m., gives participants opportunities to increase knowledge and skills in specific sports, music, art and performance, and cookery, as well as the acquisition of additional languages. As students (and parents) work and play in a multi-cultural setting, they are provided with experiences designed to develop problem-solving skills and confidence.

CIS is interested in hiring certified singles and couples, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider outstanding newly-certified teachers and those certified in a non-English speaking country. However, preference will be given to teachers with experience in the Alberta Curriculum, especially those experienced in both Alberta and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Candidates need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching but must have teaching qualifications/licensure. There is no age limit to obtain a work visa in Cambodia.

The benefits package includes furnished housing with utilities and an annual travel allowance exceeding the cost of a roundtrip ticket to Canada with extra baggage. Teachers who choose to opt out of school-provided furnished housing after their first year at CIS will be given a housing allowance. The school offers a 20% contract completion bonus. Tuition for the children of teachers is covered by the school. Additionally, each teacher receives $750 for professional development annually. Worldwide health insurance—emergency treatment only in the U.S.—is provided and includes emergency evacuation. There are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners. The low cost of living combined with the benefits allow for some fine savings or the chance for a family of four to live modestly on one salary. If you are interested in joining a growing school with the opportunity to build programs and work with an enthusiastic and engaged group of colleagues, CIS sounds like the place for you!
