International Teaching Where Japan Meets England in Tokyo

Teach abroad and join the opening of Malvern College Tokyo (MCT) in September 2023! Malvern College Tokyo aims to be the first British-branded, all-through International Baccalaureate (IB) school in Tokyo. Tokyo, a “world city” and Japan’s bustling capital, with an outstanding educational infrastructure, has been chosen by the Malvern College Family of Schools to open its tenth overseas school. Malvern College will work in unison with the Babylon education group, which already manages Malvern College Chengdu, Malvern College Hong Kong, and Malvern College Hong Kong Prep Schools within the Malvern College Family.

Founding Headmaster Mike Spenser says on the school’s website that MCT’s holistic approach allows its students “to access innovative classes in advanced technologies, engage in international competitions, and participate in renowned programmes, such as Entrepreneurial Education and Forest School Programme."

MCT’s brand new campus includes a four-story main building with classrooms, specialty rooms, a library, and administration offices. The school’s multi-purpose sport facilities feature a two-story gymnastic stadium and a running track. Amidst the neon-lit skyscrapers and historic temples, Tokyo is a place where ultramodern and traditional architecture beautifully come together.

Currently pre-enrolled are 280 pre-K through Grade 9 students, 180 are from Japan and 100 representing 10 nationalities. The day school aims to provide inquiry-based learning to follow the IB Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes. MCT is pending accreditation through the Council of International Schools (CIS) and authorization to deliver the three International Baccalaureate programmes. The current teaching staff of 33 includes eight Japanese educators to welcome those teaching abroad to the local environment.

Malvern College Tokyo values Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) as much as the academic programme in supporting pupils in their personal development, in building their confidence, and in instilling the Malvern Qualities of resilience, risk-taking, self-awareness, open mindedness, kindness, collaboration, curiosity, ambition, independence, integrity, and humility. In addition to the development of new interests and skills, Malvern also places great value on the relationships built during CCAs with peers and staff leading the activities.

MCT hires certified teachers of diverse profiles who wish to teach abroad, including couples with a non-teaching spouse and newly-certified candidates. Teachers need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per government regulations, certified teachers up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.

The overseas teaching benefits package includes a settling in allowance, annual airfare, a contribution of 50% to a retirement plan, and full tuition for dependents. MCT provides opportunities for professional development. Local health insurance is provided, with the employee paying a percentage.
