Overseas Teaching at a Haven Near Bangkok

Launched in 2017, Singapore International School of Thonburi (SISB-TR), is one of four SISB campuses in Thailand, with a fifth campus due to open in August 2022. The Thonburi campus has enrolled more than 700 students from Nursery to Year 9 within a relatively short period of time.

The relative serenity and tranquility of Thonburi allows its residents time away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok while still being close to shopping malls and a range of restaurants to suit different palates. The school is under 50 kilometers from Suvarnabhumi Airport, near the city center and international community, with a residential area just a short taxi ride away.

While many international schools emphasize the growth and development of their students through a rigorous curriculum and holistic teaching methods, SISB-TR places equal emphasis on the development of their teachers and facilities. The school began construction on a state-of-the-art Sixth Form school building in 2020 to support its growing community. The new development—to be completed in August 2021—will feature eco-friendly architectural amenities, such as an eco-linkway, and the Nurture@Nature Learning Area. Inside, classrooms will be equipped with the latest technology in education in addition to Smartboards.

SISB-TR is fully accredited by the Ministry of Education of Thailand. The majority of its Nursery–Year 9 (UK) students are Thai, with 1% from North America. The teaching staff of 84 represents 19 countries, including 15 from Thailand, 10 from North America, and four from the U.K. The school says,

By using the best curricula coupled with highly qualified and experienced educators, SISB prepares our students for this fast-paced world by equipping them with holistic, 21st-century skills that will enable them to thrive and succeed in various roles. Our students develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and communication skills, among others, in addition to academic knowledge.

SISB-TR delivers the Early Years Foundation stage from the United Kingdom, complemented by a healthy exposure to languages. This prepares its young learners to achieve academic excellence through hands-on activities while gaining a strong foundation in English, Chinese, and Thai.

In the Primary Years, SISB-TR has adopted the world-renowned Singapore curriculum. A trilingual focus in the curriculum remains, building on the language proficiency that students acquire in the Early Years. A strong emphasis is placed on cultivating a nurturing, holistic environment where students are able to engage in a myriad of enriching activities, such as drama, music, art, robotics, gymnastics and taekwondo.

In Years 8 and 9 a hybrid of Singapore and UK curricula is used, with a transition to Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education for Year 10 and 11 students, when the school expands to accommodate them. Plans are underway to offer a unique, dual-track system for high school students, in which they can choose between two acclaimed curricula—the Cambridge AS/A Levels or the IB Diploma Programme.

SISB-TR prefers to hire certified single teachers and couples with a non-teaching partner but will consider teaching couples as well as newly-certified candidates. Teachers must possess an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Candidates up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.

Teachers can be assured of a vibrant and meaningful international teaching career at SISB. In addition to a competitive remuneration package, a career in SISB offers tremendous potential for growth. Because of its sister campuses in Thailand, SISB can offer valuable opportunities for staff to progress and assume leadership positions at different levels and at different campuses.

The SISB-TR package includes a one-time relocation allowance, a monthly housing stipend, and annual airfare. Tuition is free for up to two dependents, with all other costs covered by the teacher. A comprehensive, worldwide group medical insurance plan, covering both outpatient and hospitalization, is automatically offered to all full-time teachers and staff from the date of hire. Staff attend at least three days of professional development per year. Combined with the low cost of living in Thailand, these benefits add up to some good savings or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary.
