Overseas Teaching Jobs at Discovery Bay International School

Hong Kong's Discovery Bay International School (DBIS), known for its active community and tranquil environment on the beautiful island of Lantau, is now a member of Search Associates. The DBIS student experience is characterized by a highly personalized learning environment, small class sizes, creative approaches to teaching and learning, and a broad range of extra-curricular activities. At the heart of DBIS’s educational philosophy are the values of kindness, respect, and compassion. This diverse school opened in the early 80s as a result of the establishment of the Hong Kong Resort Company on Lantau. Through continuous development and expansion, DBIS reached its goal of becoming a pre-K–12 school in 2013. The school is also recognized as a leading provider of Early Years and Primary education in Hong Kong.

Presently, 1,049 K–12 students of 44 nationalities attend DBIS, with 4% from Hong Kong and 44% from North America and the U.K. The majority of the teaching staff of 84 comes from the U.K., and four come from China and four from North America. This day school offers a British curriculum—the U.K. Primary, Early Years, and Secondary Programmes, A-Levels, and General Certificate of Secondary Education—along with the International Primary Curriculum and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. On the school website, 2017–2018 Head Boy Steven Keating and Head Girl Ailie Ikeda describe the school’s extracurricular activities:

“As a school, we collectively understand that each individual has their own specific needs; that is why we offer different creative arts to cater to all students. The school participates in the annual ISTA drama festival, which we hosted to great success in early 2017 whilst also hosting a drama production put on by our very own students, which only gets better each and every year. . . [We] participate in the music [events that] The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) [hosts] annually, providing students with a chance to explore different musical cultures from across South East Asia. In school, musical lessons are taught by externally hired professionals that offer a range of different instruments to study, which is why our musical department is so highly regarded.

We excel in sporting events around Hong Kong as we take part in ISSFHK—the premier athletics championships for international schools and the HK Swim Championships. We also compete in sports abroad, with our participation in FOBISIA sports championships.”

Its membership with FOBISIA also allows DBIS to participate in Model United Nations (MUN) and mathematics competitions.

DBIS is interested in hiring singles and couplesmarried, unmarried, or with a non-teaching spouse. Additionally, the school is interested in exceptional, newly-certified candidates and those who have been certified in a non-English speaking country. Teachers must be certified but need not hold their academic degree in the subject that they will be teaching. DBIS will also consider hiring interns. There is no age limit for certified teachers to obtain a work visa in Hong Kong.

DBIS offers a settling-in allowance and a highly competitive salary, not subject to tax. The school awards a 100% tuition benefit for one child. Professional development is provided as well. Worldwide health insurance, including dental, is covered, with the employee paying a percentage. Local employment opportunities are available for non-teaching spouses. The DBIS package offers a chance for substantial savings or the opportunity for a family of four to live on one salary.
