Overseas Teaching Opportunities in Beijing

Since its founding in 1956, Beijing No. 80 High School (BJ80) has received the designations of Regional Key High School as well as Exemplary High School. In 2003, BJ80 became a pioneer of Chinese public schools that met qualifications to enroll foreign students. Seven years later, it earned the title of the first National Experimental High School Program as well as the title of Beijing Experimental High School. In 2011, President Hu Jintao paid a visit to the faculty and students at BJ80, recognizing the school’s continuous efforts to foster the learning and character development of outstanding graduates. In 2013, BJ80 officially became one of the few high schools sending students to China’s elite Peking University. The website chinaeducenter.com says,

Beijing No. 80 High School has a track record of great achievement at the education of science and technology, physical education, audio-visual education, foreign languages, computer science and international education.

In addition to classrooms, the school, which offers boarding, has specialty areas for science and technology, art, and sport. The campus boasts a gymnasium, pool, astronomical observatory, dining hall, dormitories, offices, and a playground.

Accredited by both AdvancEd and Exemplary High School, BJ80 currently enrolls 2,600 students in Grades 6–12, mostly from China, with less than 2 % from North America and the U.K. The teaching staff of 450 includes 18 from North America and the U.K.

The school offers a choice of curricula to suit its diverse student population: A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, and various Advanced Placement courses. In addition to offering a summer Chinese language training program, BJ80 has integrated traditional Chinese culture into its curriculum: Peking Opera class, Chinese calligraphy class, and other culture-related classes have been offered. BJ80 has also developed a series of school-based textbooks just for international students!

At present, BJ80 enrolls in its international department approximately 400 students from over 30 countries and regions. Students with outstanding academic records are admitted to the top universities at home and abroad. The multi-cultural learning environment of BJ80 is supported by the sharing and appreciation of diverse theme-related activities and programs of the school’s student associations.

Students reside in air-conditioned dormitories featuring double rooms, a washroom, telephone, and laundry service. Dormitory staff and a health clinic doctor are available to assist students on a 24/7 basis. The dining hall serves Chinese, Western, Korean, and Islamic food.

BJ80 is interested in hiring single and married teachers, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider outstanding newly-certified teachers; local experienced teachers lacking certification; and those certified in non-English speaking countries. Candidates must hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Certified teachers under the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.

Benefits include a housing allowance or an on-campus dormitory for singles, which includes free laundry, maintenance, internet, water, and electricity. These facilities, however, are shared with the students’ dormitory. A home visit airfare ticket is provided annually as well. The tuition benefit is 50% for up to two children at the designated primary school and 50% tuition for up to two children at BJ80 middle and high school. Other bonuses include subsidized lunch and free access to the gym. Local health insurance—including dental, life, and long-term disability—is fully covered. BJ80 provides professional development, and there are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners. This package allows for some good savings.
