Shrewsbury International School Phnom Penh: Growing a British Education Community in Cambodia

Shrewsbury International School Phnom Penh (SPP) is a young and ambitious school that has grown thoughtfully since opening as an Early Years 1 provision in a centrally located, modern building three years ago. In September 2024, SPP expanded with the opening of its primary campus, located on a riverside site approximately 15 minutes from the city center, offering convenient access for families. The school currently serves students from pre-nursery to Year 6 and will continue its planned growth through to Year 10 when a new, purpose-built campus opens in September 2026.

SPP is preparing to inaugurate its world-class facilities on nearly 18 acres in Sen Sok, Phnom Penh. Designed to support outstanding teaching and learning, the new campus will include fully equipped classrooms, modern science and technology laboratories, a 600-seat theatre and creative arts center, an Olympic-standard swimming pool and sports complex, and a purpose-built library and Sixth Form center. Outdoor facilities will feature a running track surrounding an expansive playing field, creating exceptional opportunities for both academic and co-curricular learning.

Currently in the process of accreditation with the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), SPP enrolls 61 students in its pre-primary and primary programs, 58% of whom are Cambodian. The close-knit international faculty reflects a wide range of backgrounds, with educators from Cambodia, the UK, Korea, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Romania. As the school expands, SPP plans to offer the full UK curriculum through GCSEs and, in time, A Levels.

Co-curricular learning is an integral part of life at SPP. Students can choose from a broad range of activities including sports and athletics; music, drama, and dance ensembles; STEM and design clubs; creative arts and languages; service learning; and environmental action and leadership initiatives. These programs enrich the curriculum while encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and personal growth.

At the heart of school and student life is SPP’s House System. From Early Years through to Sixth Form, the House System fosters friendship, teamwork, and school spirit. Students belong to one of four Houses—Darwin, Sidney, Tuke, or Palin—each representing shared values of discovery, courage, service, and creativity. Regular competitions in sport, performance, and service help nurture pride, belonging, and leadership across the school community.

SPP welcomes certified single teachers from diverse professional backgrounds, including couples with non-teaching partners, and is open to considering teaching couples and newly certified educators. There is no age limit for certified teachers to obtain work visas, provided they hold an academic degree in the subject they are appointed to teach.

Overseas teaching benefits include free accommodation, a settling-in allowance, and airfare upon entry to and departure from Cambodia, as well as one mid-contract flight. Tuition and after-school programs are provided free of charge for children within the age range served by SPP, and ongoing professional development is supported for all staff. Comprehensive worldwide health insurance—excluding the United States—is included with a minimal co-pay and covers emergency evacuation. In addition, local employment opportunities are available for non-teaching partners, making SPP an attractive option for educators seeking both professional growth and a supportive international community.
