Teach Abroad at a Tight-Knit Boarding School Outside Beijing

Yang Guang Qing International School of Beijing (YGQ) is a small, Canadian, day and boarding school for Grades 10-12 that has recently partnered with the prestigious Number 2 Middle School. Established 22 years ago, the school’s recent move into a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility means that it now includes professional science labs, multiple gyms, an outdoor track, a modern canteen, and coming soon, a swimming pool! YGQ is located in the quiet yet growing, family-friendly neighborhood of Yizhuang, a southeastern suburb of Beijing. Campus is 30 minutes from central Beijing—Tiananmen Square—and 30 minutes from Daxing International Airport, and malls, restaurants, metro stations, parks and gyms are all within reach.

One of the capital cities of the world, Beijing offers the best of museums, galleries, concert halls, fitness centers, parks, hiking trails, and huge modern shopping malls and markets. History enthusiasts can visit the traditional Hutongs, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, and the Marco Polo Bridge, just to name a few! Home to many Michelin-star restaurants, Beijing offers a world of culinary choices: Mongolian, Italian, Sichuan, American, Mexican, Cantonese, Smoked Meats, Hot-pot, coffee houses, and, of course the traditional Beijing Duck. A fantastic city for overseas teachers, Beijing boasts two modern international airports and four high speed railway stations, where in a few short hours, one can easily be in Xian, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Nanjing, or Hong Kong.

YGQ’s comprehensive, university preparatory curriculum includes core and elective courses in social studies and humanities, English language arts, math, science, information technology, fine and performing arts, physical education, health, community service, and afterschool activities. Accredited by the Manitoba Ministry of Education International Schools, the tight-knit high school offers curricula for the Manitoba High School Diploma or the Chinese High School Diploma to 80 local students in Grades 10-12. Head of School Ken Morgan says,

Proudly, our curriculum, our textbooks, and our diplomas, all come from Manitoba Education. Our task is to not only prepare our students to enter the foreign university of their choice but also to succeed once they are there.

The school can hire certified teachers of diverse profiles and would also consider couples, including those with a non-teaching partner, and newly-certified candidates. Additionally, YGQ would be interested in interns who wish to teach abroad. Teachers need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Certified candidates up to the age of 57 may obtain a work visa. Ken adds,

We are a small community of ten international teachers and ten local Chinese teachers, all striving towards the best education possible for our students. You will likely get to know every student in our school.

The benefits package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance, and monthly housing and transportation stipends along with an annual roundtrip flight. At the end of each contract, teachers are awarded a bonus of $3,000 CAD. Tuition for dependents in Grades 10-12 and local health insurance are fully covered. Breakfast and lunch served at the school are free for teachers and their attending children. Each year, teachers are allowed up to $1000 CAD ($775 USD) for approved professional development classes. This salary and benefits package can amount to substantial savings or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary.
