Teach Abroad in Shenzhen

To meet the increasing demand for international education and to provide high-quality educational resources in Bantian Region of Shenzhen, Shenwai Longgang International School (SLIS) was founded in September 2017. The permanent campus is under construction, but during the transitional period, the new school has made use of the facilities at Shenzhen High School of Science. Lonely planet voted Shenzen the second most desirable city to visit in 2019, next to Copenhagen:

“Drawn to its slew of new design openings and tech innovation, creatives are swarming to Shenzhen, just over the border from Hong Kong on the Chinese mainland. . . Just three decades ago, Shenzhen was a drowsy fishing village. Today, it’s one of the country’s economic powerhouse cities, at the mouth of the rapidly developing Pearl River Delta region . . . Shenzhen now has a strumming indie-music scene, cool cafes, a small contingent of craft brewers and a whole new arts district rising from the remains of former warehouses."

Currently, 67 K–5 Chinese students are enrolled. The teaching staff of 17, which includes 10 from China and four from North America and the U.K., delivers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). SLIS is a candidate school for IB authorization. In the near future, Grades 9–12 will reside in the boarding facilities while students in Grades 1–8 will continue in the day school.

SLIS is interested in hiring certified singles and married couples, including those with a non-teaching spouse. Expatriate teachers are required to have at least two years of work experience. Depending on the subject they will teach, it is possible for teachers from non-English speaking countries to obtain visa approval. However, teachers of the English language must originate from a predominantly English-speaking country. Candidates must hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Those up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.

In addition to a non-taxed salary, the SLIS benefits package includes “big and comfortable” apartments commensurate to family size, a moving allowance, and annual airfare. Full tuition is covered for one child per teaching parent. Other bonuses include free in-school breakfast and lunch as well as a bus to and from school to the nearest public transportation station. For professional development, academic staff receives an allowance of one day of leave per academic year and administrators receive a total of six. There are also in-school training opportunities during work days.Worldwide health insurance—except the U.S.—is fully covered and includes life insurance and emergency evacuation. Teachers could save quite a bit on this package.
