Teach Abroad in the Summer Palace of Beijing, China

Teach abroad at Beanstalk International Bilingual School Haidian Academy (BIBS HDA), established in 2019 on 100 acres near the Xishan hills of Beijing.

Haidan Academy is home to the beautiful Summer Palace, with its lakes and ancient pavilions. The Fodor’s Travel website describes Haidian as Beijing’s emerging educational and technological center, housing some of China’s “most elite educational institutions” as well as offices of Microsoft, Siemens, Sun, and more. While the urban vicinity may delight with electronic superstores, cafes, and dance clubs, its myriad school campuses offer peaceful respite, with their wide lawns and Chinese gardens adorned with scenic bridges and pagodas.

The BIBS HDA campus can serve more than 1,000 students and is fully equipped with an indoor stadium and tennis stadium, a theatre, a performance center, a STEAM center, and other facilities.

Accredited by the Chinese Ministry of Education, BIBS HDA is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme candidate school also authorized to offer A-Levels, Advanced Placement courses, and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, in addition to the Chinese National Curriculum. Currently enrolled are 521 pre-K-12 students, most of whom are from China. The teaching staff of 147 includes 107 Chinese educators. The teacher-student ratio is low at 1:5, to create an ideal learning environment for overseas teaching.

Extracurricular activities at BIBS HDA are organized to “inspire every talent,” says the school. Students interested in science and technology may pursue, among others, STEAM, programming, logical thinking, and robots. For athletics, swimming, American football, golf, and tennis are some of the offerings. Those who love letters and language enrichment may join literature appreciation, creative writing, speech, debate, and more. Finally, artists may practice calligraphy, painting, chorus, and theater.

BIBS HDA hires certified singles and couples and would consider couples with a non-teaching partner and newly certified candidates. Teachers need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per government regulations, certified teachers up to the age of 58 may obtain a work visa.

The international teaching benefits package includes a non-taxed salary, an initial moving allowance, annual housing allowance, and an annual airfare. Tuition is provided for up to two dependents, and teachers enjoy free daily lunches. Ongoing IB training is the school’s focus for professional development. In addition, for overseas teachers, worldwide health insurance—except for the U.S.—is fully covered.
