Teach Overseas and Experience Nigeria in New, World-Class Facilities

Teach abroad and join the opening of a new school in September 2024. Charterhouse Lagos (CHL) aims to set a new standard in education in Nigeria and West Africa. With world-class facilities and a focus on excellence, the school aims to foster students with a passion for learning, excellence, and leadership.

Charterhouse Lagos is the first British independent school in West Africa and the first Charterhouse school in Africa. There are ambitious plans to transform the educational standards in Nigeria and West Africa and establish more schools across the African continent.

Experience overseas teaching surrounded by the bustling culture of Lagos, the largest city in Africa, with a population of over 20 million. The vibrant city buzzes with activity both day and night and is famed throughout Africa for its music scene and movie industry, Nollywood. A growing number of restaurants and bars offer varying international and local cuisine. The Lagos coastline features scenic beaches that are a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city center. A couple of beach resorts and holiday homes are only accessible by boat. December in Lagos is a hub of entertainment activities and festivals.

Located in Ogombo, on the Lekki Peninsula, south of mainland Lagos, the school community is self-contained, with 24-hour security ensuring that students and staff can take advantage of the amazing new, world-class facilities. CHL expects students in Years 7-13 to board at the school.

The campus will include fully connected classrooms, science and STEAM labs, music, art, drama, and library spaces, an 800-seat professional standard theatre, a 25-metre competition pool, along with a learn-to-swim pool, an NBA standard indoor basketball stadium, outdoor and indoor football pitches, and a beautifully landscaped campus that offers relaxation as well as a connection to nature.

The school will offer an international education for students aged five to 18 (UK Years 1 to 13), using the British curriculum and leading up to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, and A-level qualifications. CHL students will be able to aspire to the absolute best universities worldwide. For the school’s first year, it estimates that 250 students will be enrolled in UK Years 1 to 4. The teaching staff of 40 will include 15 Nigerian educators to support expat teachers in their cultural transition into the country.

CHLwill offer a wealth of co-curricular activities. Physical fitness and sports enthusiasts will enjoy Sports Academy, Health & Fitness, basketball, swimming, tennis, and fencing. Students interested in the arts can participate in Art & Craft, drama, choir or instrumental ensembles. Myriad activities will offer academic, creative and intellectual enrichment, competition, service, and just plain fun: Coding & Robotics, Chess, Debate, Conservation, and Legos.

CHL can hire certified singles and teaching couples, including couples with a non-teaching partner, and newly certified candidates. However, the school says that same-sex, legally married couples in other countries would be considered "unmarried" in Nigeria. Additionally, unmarried teaching couples would be considered as singles for visa purposes. Teachers need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching, and as per government regulations, there is no age limit for certified teachers to obtain a work visa.

The benefits package includes a non-taxed salary and a fully furnished apartment with utilities. Also included are allowances for settling in and annual airfare for international teachers and their dependents. Tuition is 100% free for up to two dependents. Other bonuses include free meals daily—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—in the school dining room and access to a staff club, pool, gym, and transport around the community. CHL also provides opportunities for professional development for its staff. Worldwide health insurance is covered and includes dental benefits.
