Teaching and Living in South Korea: Opportunities at Daegu International School

Explore international teaching opportunities at Daegu International School (DIS), a K–12, coeducational boarding school in South Korea offering a U.S.-based curriculum alongside a robust after-school activities (ASA) program. DIS is dedicated to developing confident, compassionate learners who contribute meaningfully to a global society. The school provides a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment that supports students’ social, emotional, and intellectual growth.

Located in the heart of South Korea, Daegu is an affordable and welcoming mid-sized city known for its efficiency and accessibility. As the country’s fourth-largest city, Daegu offers the cultural richness and conveniences of urban life while maintaining a friendly, approachable atmosphere. An excellent public transportation system allows residents to travel across the city in under 30 minutes, and high-speed rail connects Daegu to Seoul and Busan in less than two hours.

Historically a major textile hub, Daegu has evolved into a center for high-tech industries and fashion. The city blends tradition with modern life through cultural landmarks such as Donghwasa Temple on the slopes of Palgong Mountain, the Daegu Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine, and the historic Seomun Market. Residents also enjoy attractions like E-World and 83 Tower, a lively café culture—including pet-friendly cafés—and tranquil green spaces such as Suseong Lake, surrounded by walking paths and diverse dining options.

DIS’s purpose-built campus is set between the city and the mountains, offering an inspiring backdrop for learning. Facilities include a full gymnasium, auditorium, music and art studios, and multiple athletic fields. The vibrant, student-centered campus features flexible spaces that encourage curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. Light-filled classrooms and dedicated areas for the arts and physical education create an engaging environment for teaching and learning.

Fully licensed by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and recognized by the Maine Department of Education as an associated school of Lee Academy in Lee, Maine, DIS offers a rigorous American-style curriculum aligned with Common Core and NGSS standards. Students earn a U.S. high school diploma and may pursue Advanced Placement (AP) coursework.

DIS enrolls 357 students from kindergarten through Grade 12, with boarding available for students in Grades 5–12. While the majority of students are South Korean, the community represents 27 nationalities. The international faculty is supported by South Korean colleagues, who contribute valuable local insight and make up 13% of the teaching cohort.

Beyond academics, students participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities and lunch clubs, including National Honor Society, Girl Scouts, Math Club, SOAR (Students Organizing Against Racism), Eco-lution, Chinese Calligraphy, String Orchestra, Jets Media, Rock Bands, STEM Club, Latin Club, Mini Scientists, Dance Team, and many others.

The school also offers a dynamic athletics program for students in Grades 3–12, with opportunities in futsal/soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, and badminton. Performing arts are a vibrant part of school life, with music concerts and talent showcases throughout the year. Community traditions such as Spirit Week, Festa, the Winter and Spring Fine Arts Festivals, and Field Day foster school spirit and connection. Leadership opportunities are woven throughout these experiences, reflecting DIS’s commitment to student-centered learning.

The on-campus boarding facility accommodates up to 120 students and is designed to provide a comfortable, supportive living environment. The residence includes shared rooms for two students, each with a private bathroom, along with study areas, staff offices, laundry facilities, and secure 24-hour supervision. Communal spaces on the ground floor include a large lounge, game room, kitchen, and fitness center. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, radiant heating, and wireless internet.

DIS welcomes certified educators from diverse professional backgrounds, including teaching couples with a non-teaching partner and newly certified teachers. While a subject-specific degree is not required, please note that Korean government regulations set an upper age limit of 60 for work visa eligibility. The school adds,

New teachers joining our community quickly discover that DIS feels like a family, a place where professional excellence and personal well-being are equally prioritized. Whether you’re an experienced international educator or new to teaching abroad, DIS offers the ideal balance of purpose, community, and adventure.

Educators at DIS receive a non-taxed salary along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes relocation and settling-in allowances, monthly housing with electricity and Wi-Fi, annual airfare, and basic furniture for first-year hires. Tuition is provided for up to two dependent children, with parents responsible only for the associated tax. All campus meals are free of charge. Worldwide health insurance—excluding the U.S.—is provided, with partial employee contribution, and includes dental coverage.

Professional learning at DIS is intentional and highly valued. The school believes that excellent teaching is rooted in continuous growth, and faculty regularly engage with current research and best practices.
