Tromsø International School (TRINT) is a small and well-established International Baccalaureate (IB) World School located on the campus of UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. The school serves approximately 200 students aged 12–16 and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary and Middle Years Programmes. TRINT is an authorized IB school operating under the Norwegian Private School Act (§2-1) and has been part of the international education landscape in Norway for over 15 years.
The school community is diverse and international, representing many nationalities, while remaining firmly embedded in the Norwegian education system. Approximately half of the faculty are Norwegian educators, and the school places strong emphasis on collaboration, inclusion, and professional learning. Teaching and learning are supported by modern facilities, purpose-built for inquiry-based and collaborative approaches, following the school’s move into a new building in 2022.
Living and Working in Tromsø
Tromsø is located at 69 degrees north, well above the Arctic Circle, and is the largest city in Northern Norway. It is home to a major university, a university hospital, and a range of research institutions, creating a strong professional environment in education, health, and science.
Life in Tromsø is shaped by its northern location. Winters are long and dark, with periods of polar night, and weather conditions can be demanding, with snow, wind, and rapidly changing conditions. At the same time, summers offer continuous daylight, and access to nature is immediate and extensive. Candidates considering relocation should be comfortable with a climate that can at times feel harsh and remote, particularly for those unfamiliar with Arctic environments.
The city is safe, well-organized, and compact, with reliable public transportation and short commuting distances. Tromsø is culturally active, with festivals, concerts, and community events throughout the year, but it remains a small city by international standards. Successful long-term residents are typically those who value nature, community, and a slower pace of life alongside professional engagement.
Professional and Family Considerations
Tromsø International School is closely connected to the surrounding educational and research community through its location on the university campus. Students participate in national and Nordic academic competitions and benefit from local enrichment opportunities, including sports clubs and the municipal cultural school (Tromsø Kulturskole).
TRINT seeks qualified and experienced educators with relevant academic degrees and IB experience or willingness to undertake IB training. Applications are welcome from single teachers and from candidates with partners working outside education. Residence and work permits are issued in accordance with Norwegian immigration regulations.
Employment Conditions
Employment at TRINT is governed by Norwegian labor law and tax regulations. Salaries are subject to Norwegian taxation, and all employees are enrolled in the Norwegian social security system. The school provides required IB professional development and covers costs related to mandatory IB training when applicable. Employees are offered local health insurance and employment conditions in line with Norwegian standards. Dependent children may be offered school places in accordance with school policy and capacity.
