Teaching Just Outside New York City: Join the Learning Community at Saddle River Day School

Just forty minutes from New York City in North Bergen, New Jersey, Saddle River Day School (SRDS) offers international educators the opportunity to teach in a dynamic American independent school community while enjoying access to one of the world’s most vibrant cultural centers. Serving students in Grades K–12, SRDS is passionately committed to nurturing the whole child—encouraging intellectual risk-taking while caring deeply for each student as an individual.

Small class sizes and strong student-teacher ratios allow educators to know their students well and tailor instruction to their needs. “We challenge each student as an individual, knowing that every person acquires skills and maturity at a different pace,” notes the school. This personalized approach creates meaningful opportunities for teachers to innovate, differentiate, and build lasting relationships with learners.

The school’s spacious, purpose-built campus is surrounded by tall trees and green lawns, creating a welcoming and inspiring work environment. North Hall houses the gymnasium, IDEAS Lab, Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, graphic arts studio, and Senior Commons/Cafeteria, along with Middle and Upper School classrooms. Alford Hall features the Performing Arts Center, studio art rooms, RebelVisions TV & Production Studio, music room, and most science and middle school classrooms. Main Hall is home to the Lower School (PreK3–Grade 4) and administrative offices. These thoughtfully designed spaces support collaboration, creativity, and cross-disciplinary learning.

Fully accredited by the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools and the Middle States Association, SRDS enrolls approximately 600 students. While the majority of students and faculty are from the United States, the school community includes international students representing 10 nations. Advanced Placement course offerings further enrich the academic program.

Beyond the classroom, SRDS fosters a vibrant culture of clubs and activities that deepen student engagement. Dedicated club time built into the school day allows students to pursue passions without conflicting with athletics or after-school commitments. Opportunities range from American Red Cross Club, Environmental and Sustainability Club, Innovation Team, and literary journal Mimesis, to Music Heals the World Club, Performing Arts Club, Pre-Med Club, Rock Climbing, Model UN, Debate, Gardening, Science Olympiad, yearbook, and more. Students with unique interests are encouraged to launch new initiatives—an ethos that reflects the school’s spirit of entrepreneurship and leadership.

SRDS’s enrichment opportunities extend to learners at every age. The After School Sports Club (ASSC) offers students weekly instruction with certified instructors, for an extra fee. These activities include Dance, Multi sport, mini golf, running, Zumba, Zumbatonics, Speed & Agility Training, Soccer, Flag Football, Martial Arts, Golf Fencing.

SRDS hires teachers of diverse profiles, including couples with a non-teaching partner, newly certified candidates, and experienced teaching professionals without certification. They would also consider interns seeking experience. Teachers need not hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching, and as per U.S. regulations, there is no age limit for teachers to obtain a work visa.

The benefits package includes a moving allowance; full tuition for dependents, depending on space; and a contribution of 5% to a retirement plan. SRDS provides professional development opportunities for its staff. Local health insurance, including dental, is provided, with the employee paying a percentage.
