Janelle Smyth

Janelle Smyth has been with Search Associates since 2019 and brings more than two decades of experience in education, including many years living and working internationally. Having taught in both the United States and overseas, she understands firsthand the opportunities, challenges, and rewards that come with building a career abroad. Educators value her warm, practical approach and her ability to help guide them through important career decisions.

Janelle earned her BSc in Physical Education from Central Washington University before completing her Master’s in Teaching through City University in Washington State. She spent eight years teaching in Battleground, Washington, before being selected for a Fulbright Teaching Exchange to England. That year, spent living just outside Liverpool, proved to be life changing. It introduced her to the world of international education and was also where she met her husband, Peter. What began as a one-year exchange developed into an international career that would take them to schools and communities across several continents.

Over the years, Janelle has lived and worked in the United States, UK, Egypt, and Panama, gaining experience with diverse student populations and international school communities. Most recently, she served as Head of Middle School Physical Education at the International School of Panama. Her years overseas gave her a deep appreciation for both the professional growth and personal adventure that international education can provide, as well as an understanding of the practical realities involved in relocating and settling into a new country.

Having experienced multiple international moves herself, she enjoys supporting educators as they explore opportunities around the world, whether they are considering their first overseas position or preparing for their next international adventure. Outside of work, she enjoys travel, staying active, and maintaining the lifelong friendships and connections she has built through the international education community.
