About the school

The American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) was founded in 1982 to provide Americanstyle education and international curriculum for expatriate families living in Johannesburg, South Africa. The school’s origin traces back to a July 4th Independence Day picnic, where a group of Americans advertised the opening of a new “American” school. Just months later, AISJ opened its doors on September 6, 1982, welcoming its first students under the leadership of founder Ed Norman, with support from the American Embassy and multinational companies in South Africa.

Today, AISJ is a thriving international school in Johannesburg, offering Pre-K to Grade 12 education, while still preserving its historical roots, including the iconic crescent-shaped horse stables, now the administrative heart of the campus. AISJ continues to provide world-class American education for students from around the globe.
