International School Opportunities on the Island of Mauritius

Le Bocage International School (LBIS) rests on the ‘paradise island’ of Mauritius, nestled in the slopes of Mount Ory. From there it commands a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and plains leading down to the Indian Ocean.  The centrally-located international campus has a beautiful feel to it, and provides open and lush green spaces for students and staff. Teachers looking for an ideal teach abroad experience will enjoy the island experience offered at Le Bocage International School.

LBIS began in 1990 as a one room schoolhouse with bare minimum resources and rapidly grew to today’s gorgeous multipurpose campus with world class facilities. LBIS caters for the education of 800 boys and girls in the 11 to 18 age range who come from diverse religious, social and cultural backgrounds of approximately thirty different nationalities. LBIS is operated by PROGOS, a non-profit making company that exists solely for the purpose of offering an English medium international education.

The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years, Diploma, and Career-related Programmes as well as exams for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. LBIS is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is a full member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA). Over 50% of students graduate with an IB Bilingual Diploma (English & French), and over 80% of graduating students continue their studies abroad. Over eighty percent of the teaching staff are from Mauritius, and the remaining staff members represent 9 nationalities.

LBIS has made a strong commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, and in 2022 the Board approved the 2023–2025 Strategic Action Plan, which includes the goal of working towards becoming a Net Zero School. The school is actively involved in the local and international community, and in 2022 held its first LBImpactS Week. Every year, all students participate in a service-learning programme.

To enhance the teach abroad experience, the day school comprises more than 45 learning spaces, including four science laboratories, two art studios, a three-room Design & Technology learning area, and a large purpose-built library, all in a wireless facility. Teaching spaces are equipped with Apple TVs and 65-inch TVs. The year 2015 saw the completion of a new Performing Arts and Language Lab Block, housing a state-of-the-art language lab, music room, theatre and recording studio. The multi-purpose sports hall functions also as an auditorium for the many special events held each year and houses a 50-ft. climbing wall, multiple badminton, table-tennis and basketball courts. The outdoor space offers a number of playing fields including four football fields, and hard-court surfaces. There is also a small canteen and dining facility on campus.

Students are engaged in a number of extra-curricular activities, including, but not limited to local and international sports activities, Model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh programme, Debate Club, World Eco School, National drama/theatre competitions, and STEM projects/competitions.

The school hires experienced educators of diverse profiles, including seasoned teachers without teaching credentials, and couples with a teacher or a non-teaching partner. They would also consider interns wishing to teach abroad. Candidates must hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per government regulations, those up to the age of 55 may obtain a work visa.

The benefits in this overseas teaching package include a moving and monthly housing allowance as well as an annual roundtrip airfare. Tuition is covered in full for the first two children and 50% for the third child. LBIS provides professional development opportunities for all staff. Local health insurance—including life, dental, and long-term disability—is fully covered. This benefit package could amount to some good savings or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary.
