Overseas Teaching Positions in Azerbaijan
School Spotlights
Founded in 2012, Baku Modern International School (BMIS) initially operated as the English-language stream of the Baku Modern School. Since 2016, however, BMIS has been functioning as an independent international school within the Baku Modern Educational Complex. Expats will easily adapt to the school environment, which is well maintained and on par with that of other international school campuses. The school is located in the capital city and just a 7–10 minute drive to the city center. A large and still-growing capital city, Baku is easy to navigate and safe to explore, as is the surrounding region.
Fully accredited by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan as well as the Western Association of Schools and College, BMIS delivers the U.S. Common Core curriculum. The school is committed to developing innovative approaches to help students prepare for higher education and become globally-minded critical thinkers. The school says,
“In all subject areas and at all grade levels, students learn, practice and develop critical thinking, international mindedness, technological literacy, and academic achievement.”
BMIS follows a traditional calendar, starting on September 15th and ending on June 15th. An instructional week consists of five days, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students participate in curricular activities every day until 1:00 pm, and after lunch they complete homework assignments and extra-curricular activities, including sports.
Currently enrolled are 230 K–8 students, mostly Azerbaijani. The teaching staff of 56 comprises 50 from Azerbaijan and six expatriates. Teachers are supplied with curricular and technological resources needed to support classroom instruction, and the school is open to teachers’ suggestions for acquiring new resources.
BMIS is interested in hiring single teachers and couples, and will consider exceptional newly-certified teachers, and interns. However, all candidates must be certified in an English-speaking country and possess their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. There is no age limit to obtain a work visa in Azerbaijan.
The benefits package includes housing with utilities, annual airfare, as well as a cash sum for moving and settling in. Teachers receive tuition benefits for their children, to be determined on an individual basis. Local health insurance, including dental and emergency evacuation, is fully covered. BMIS says it strives for excellence and prides itself on maintaining a positive working environment with opportunities for growth for educators. Professional development programs are determined by the school curriculum director and according to the school’s implementation plan. The BMIS salary and benefits package could mean substantial savings or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary. There are also local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners.
