Welcome! I joined Search Associates in August 2014 after spending over half of my career in education at international schools as a teacher and administrator. These experiences changed my life and I am eager to work with educators who are seeking a first position abroad or who are looking for another opportunity in international education, whether in a teaching or leadership role.
My adventure began shortly after I earned my MA in Reading and became certified as a Reading Specialist, a position that was just being created at the American School of Paris. As a Francophile and someone eager to work with students experiencing reading difficulties, joining the faculty at ASP was a dream come true. This was followed by a move to California, where I worked as a Reading Specialist, while earning my CA Administrative Services credential. My next roles were principalships in two San Francisco Bay Area schools, one of which was located on the Stanford University campus, serving a very diverse population of international students, including many for whom English was a second or third language. When an opportunity arose to apply for the Lower School Principal position at the American School in London, it seemed like a wonderful chance to return to international education . As is the case for many international educators, my intended "several years abroad" turned into almost two decades!
My favorite role at ASL was recruiting and hiring teachers because I am passionate about the impact that excellent teachers have on students' personal and intellectual development. Many of those teachers were Search candidates, who clearly stood out from candidates in other pools. Even when there were no open positions at our school, I enjoyed counseling teachers at job fairs. I believe strongly that teaching in another culture changes one's view of the world and enriches our impact on students and colleagues. During my tenure at ASL, the Lower School became partners with the Nirvana School in Pondicherry, India. Nirvana was established to provide quality education to the children of the local community. Each year, our children participated in a fund raising project and a team of LS teachers spent their February Break in India providing professional development for the Nirvana faculty. I'm looking forward to my next visit!
Since 1998, I have been proud to be a trainer for the Principals Training Center (the PTC) and have been inspired by the now thousands of committed international school teachers and administrators I have met in these courses. I have also served as a member of the Executive Committee and as a Commissioner for the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA), a major accrediting agency whose mission it is to encourage schools around the world to engage in a process of continuous improvement. I value the many inspiring experiences I have had as a consultant and as a member of MSA Accreditation Teams, where I have observed outstanding international schools from Lithuania to Oman. I have been a frequent presenter at educational conferences such as the European Council of International Schools, the Mediterranean Council of International Schools, and at various reading and curriculum conventions. In 1999, I was honored to be one of two international educators to receive the "National Distinguished Principal Award" from the US State Department and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
Recently, I have served as the lead or co-consultant on principal and Head of School searches for a large variety of international schools. The collaboration with my Search Associates colleagues as we seek outstanding leaders has been a highlight of my career.
In 2014, my husband, Bill, and I relocated to Marin County, CA, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, to be closer to family. We are enjoying walking our black lab, Riley, on the beautiful trails here in Northern California, and seeing more of our three young grandchildren when we aren't traveling.
I believe that nothing is more important in the world's schools than ensuring that every student is taught by a caring and highly skilled teacher. I look forward to mentoring committed professional candidates as they seek an outstanding international school in which to share their talents.
I will be attending the following conferences and Job Fairs and will be making presentations at the Search Job Fairs in London, Cambridge (USA) and San Francisco ("Interviewing for Success!"). I would love to touch base with candidates and prospective candidates so please let me know if you will be attending the conferences below or will be in the area!
