Assistant Head of School / Middle School Principal
Who We Are
Pine Street School, located in New York City, near Wall Street, is one of the world’s most innovative international schools, with a bold future vision that includes ambitious STEM and environmental sustainability initiatives.
We were founded in 2014 with preschool and elementary levels (PYP) and are opening a Middle School with 6th Grade in Fall of 2019. This launch is a “soft start” with a small number of students (as few as 6) and a scaled-down program. Our official opening is the following year, Fall 2020, when we expect no more than 45 students and possibly as few as 18. We will grow the Middle School to 8th Grade year by year.
Our Middle School is a member of the Common Ground Collaborative, which was created by the founder of the PYP and consists of a network of inspired and forward-thinking schools worldwide. As a member of this organization, we will build our Middle School on the powerful principles of constructivism, transdisciplinary learning and student agency. We are building a world-class model of learning that is unlike any other, and we are doing this in the heart of New York City.
Our space is an important element of who we are, as it was personally designed by our Founder, Dr. Jennifer Jones, who is active in the growth and expansion of our programs. As you can see, it is a space designed to inspire and to invite a creative and collaborative experience.
We are seeking a unique, nontraditional, dynamic individual to lead our Middle School and collaborate with us in its development. The person who assumes this role is also a candidate to assume leadership of the full school (Nursery – 8th Grade) once our current Head of School retires, and will work closely with our current Head in the building of the Middle School.
This role – Assistant Head of School and Middle School Principal (AHOS/MSP) – requires a passion for liberated learning, charisma and confidence in public speaking, teaching skills across several subject areas, a well-rounded intellectual curiosity, and a deep understanding of the social and emotional elements of a Middle School student experience. Teaching experience at the Middle School level is a necessity.
The AHOS/MSP must be bilingual, as we are a school that offers both Spanish and Mandarin immersion. As our Middle School will provide only Spanish immersion in its first few years, we prefer someone who is bilingual in English and Spanish.
It is essential that the AHOS/MSP supports full integration of STEM and environmental sustainability throughout our curriculum. In this vein, we are looking for a person who can demonstrate a personal interest in and commitment to these areas.
Pine Street School is a “school without walls,” and so we value individuals who are skilled in building curriculum on travel and experiences beyond the classroom. Our New York City location provides limitless resources for this type of learning, and we seek a leader who will capitalize on this opportunity.
The Assistant Head of School/ Middle School Principal naturally acts as a guide and supports others, sees the classroom as a learning lab where students work independently, in pairs and small groups; facilitates student action and engagement; creates an organized and stimulating environment in and beyond the classroom and the school.
