Lower Elementary School Deputy Principal

The International Community School of Addis Ababa is seeking an exemplary, experienced Lower Elementary Deputy Principal for its Elementary School division, starting July 2022. The Lower ES Deputy Principal will support leadership of the entire Elementary school community, with a focus on Early Years and Grades 1 - 2, and ensure a safe, collaborative learning environment. The LES DP will facilitate and support the school community towards achievement of the school’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives.

The International Community School of Addis Ababa is a premier early childhood through grade 12 school offering a holistic, vigorous and inclusive program. ICS Addis offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Primary Years programs, accredited in the United States, and serves a diverse, multicultural student body on a beautiful, well-equipped campus. We are a private, not-for-profit day school serving the families of the diplomatic, aid and multinational business communities in Ethiopia. The school is located on an attractive 15-acre campus in the Old Airport suburb at the southern side of Addis Ababa.   • Master’s degree or certification in Elementary school administration or applicable qualifications.
  • Proven successful experience in educational leadership roles.
  • Successful experience as a teacher in the Early Years and/or Lower Elementary School
  • Experience with the IB PYP
  • Experience in Reggio Emilia and/or Montessori
  • Experience with Professional Learning Communities
  • Experience with Personalized Learning experiences for students.


  • Experience with the GOLD Standard for Early Childhood Education.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and commitment to working as a member of the administrative team
  • Demonstrated understanding of current educational trends including effective instructional design and assessment practices
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a positive school climate for students, staff and community
  • Experience managing change in a rapidly changing or growing school environment


The successful applicant must have a displayed belief in the importance of agency for early years and lower elementary learners; excellent interpersonal, communication, critical thinking and analytical skills; conflict resolution experience, a collaborative management style and have demonstrated organizational and planning abilities in addition to:

  • Reasoning ability: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret a variety of technical instructions.
  • Experience in a standards-based grading learning environment.
  • Experience designing personalized learning experiences for students.
  • Skills and ability to apply school educational and leadership strategies and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current educational trends including effective instructional design and assessment practices, and highly effective, learning progressive curricular programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational uses of software systems including Google Education Suite
  • Understand basic accounting principles.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a positive school climate for students, staff and community

The initial contract will be for two years (July 2022–June 2024). We have an internationally competitive deputy principal salary and benefit package.  Addis Ababa enjoys a relatively low cost of living, and there are no local taxes on salary or benefits. In addition to a base salary that allows considerable discretionary income, we provide furnished housing, an overseas-hire allowance (15%), matching retirement (10%), local utilities allowance, generous professional learning opportunities, a laptop reimbursement benefit, international family health insurance with vision and dental benefits, disability and life insurance, annual home leave, shipping/settling-in allowance, and free tuition for school age dependents. There are limited employment opportunities within Addis Ababa for a non-teaching spouse.
