Middle School Assistant Principal

Reports to: Middle School Principal

Overall Purpose
In partnership with the Middle School Principal, the Assistant Principal is responsible for implementing the school’s mission and vision, divisional and all-school goals, and overseeing the day-to-day running of a division of over 80 faculty and staff and 450 students in Grade 5-8. As an instructional leader, the Assistant Principal will assist in collaboratively building a professional school culture of master teaching and effective learning. The Assistant Principal will support the Principal in creating a welcoming climate for students and families, and monitoring student behavior and success. The Assistant Principal will be integral to ensuring smooth and orderly operations of the Middle School, communicating and working regularly with all aspects of the community.


Role of the Assistant Principal includes: 

  • Demonstrating a thorough understanding of the developmental needs of middle school students 
  • Working closely with students and parents to achieve growth and success for each student
  • Enforcing expectations for student conduct, including the management of moderate and serious disciplinary issues
  • Creating a positive school culture that supports faculty growth and development
  • Demonstrating knowledge and experience in effective teacher supervision, evaluation, and mentoring 
  • Working closely and productively with team leaders and department heads to implement curricular programs and initiatives 
  • Supporting teachers in using research-based methods for designing curriculum and developing instructional strategies
  • Serving on the K-12 Academic Leadership Team, overseeing school-wide curriculum development and academic program initiatives


Responsibilities of the Assistant Principal include:  

  • Communicating promptly, clearly, and effectively with students and parents about program goals and procedures 
  • Participating regularly in various school activities, parent meetings, student programs, and athletic events 
  • Working efficiently and collaboratively to develop course schedules and reporting structures for faculty and students 
  • Upholding the Middle School Code of Conduct by working with students, parents, faculty and staff 
  • Overseeing field trips, risk assessments, student activities and school-wide projects
  • Any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Principal


Selection criteria

Essential qualifications/experience:

  • Evidence of a successful middle school teaching career 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the structure, philosophy and curriculum of an effective middle school model
  • Knowledge and understanding of independent/international school communities
  • An advanced degree, as well as evidence of a commitment to continuous professional development 
  • Experience developing successful and supportive relationships with faculty and staff, parents and students 
  • Evidence of successful educational leadership

Desirable qualifications/experience:

  • Previous experience as a Middle School Assistant Principal, team leader, department chair, or activities coordinator
  • Significant involvement in leading curriculum and program development initiatives
  • Previous experience as an international educator
